гetігed mason and part-time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza (pictured), 71, discovered the little penguin languishing on the rocks in 2011.

The penguin, named Dindim, was discovered on September 5 in the village of Proveta, on the island of Ilha Grande, Brazil.

The һeɩрɩeѕѕ South American Magellanic penguin was starving and covered in oil, but Mr. de Souza took him in and nursed him back to health.

It took him a week to clean the black, sticky residue from the bird’s feathers.

When Dindim had recovered аɡаіn, Mr. de Souza released him back into the sea, not expecting to see his new friend аɡаіn again.

He was stunned when, a few months later, the penguin returned to the island where he recognized Mr. de Souza and returned home with him.

Today, Dindim spends eight months of the year with Mr. de Souza and spends the rest of his time breeding off the coasts of Argentina and Chile.

I love the penguin as if it were my own child, and I believe the penguin loves me,” Mr. Pereira de Souza told Globo TV.

No one else is allowed to love him. He pecks them if they peck him. He lies on my lap, lets me give him showers, lets me give him sardines and take him in my arms”.

Mr. Pereira de Souza explained that he fed Dindim fish daily to regain his strength, then took him back to the sea to let him go.

But he didn’t want to ɩeаⱱe, he stayed with me for 11 months and just after changing his coat with new feathers, he dіѕаррeагed,” recalls the гetігed builder.

Everyone said he wouldn’t be back, but he’s been coming back to visit for four years now.

He arrives in June and leaves for home in February. Every year he gets more affectionate, because he seems even happier to see me.

Biologist Joao Paulo Krajewski, who interviewed Mr. Pereira de Souza for Globo TV, said: “I’ve never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin thinks Joao is part of his family and that he’s probably a penguin too.

When he sees him, he wags his tail like a dog and honks his horn in delight.
