In a heart-wrenching discovery, we found Diogo rummaging through trash bins in search of food, unveiling a shocking reality – half of his face had been consumed by worms. The moment he turned to face us left everyone in awe, prompting thoughts of a possible gunshot injury.
Our rescue mission unfolded as Diogo was rushed to the hospital for a closer examination, revealing two bullets lodged in his leg and a bullet passing through his face. Radiographic results painted a grim picture, indicating high infection levels and an alarming drop in hematocrit, with the potential onset of Ehrlichiosis due to a substantial tick infestation.
Despite the severity of his condition, our dedicated team embarked on a journey to stabilize Diogo. Regular bandage changes became a norm, and plans for a blood transfusion were set in motion to prepare him for a crucial surgery aimed at cleaning the ravaged wound.
Diogo, a true fighter, successfully navigated through the first surgery. However, with exposed bones, his recovery demanded rigorous pain management, potent antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and treatment for Lyme disease. The next phase involved a meticulous skin graft surgery, utilizing skin flaps from his head, mouth, and neck.
The journey was far from easy, yet Diogo displayed incredible resilience. Despite a challenging night, he managed to independently eat, drink, and use the bathroom. A subsequent facial reconstructive surgery was scheduled, offering hope for the restoration of his vision in the remaining eye.
