The newborn, a stunning albino with a striking white coat and delicate pink nose, has quickly become the center of attention at the zoo.
Zoo veterinarian Carlos Molina revealed this cub is one of only four albino pumas known worldwide.
Captivating photos depict the unnamed cub standing out amidst its two beige-colored and spotted siblings; all cuddled up close to their mother.
While the albino cub appears healthy and is feeding well, extra precautions are being taken due to its sensitivity to sunlight.
Albino pumas require special care, and the zoo is ensuring their protection by housing them in a sealed cage to prevent stress and confusion, particularly for the mother, who could mistakenly perceive human scents as a threat to her young.
Furthermore, the male puma, the mother’s mate, is housed separately to avoid any potential harm to the cubs, as male pumas have been observed to be territorial and may threaten their offspring.
Currently, the genders of the litter remain undisclosed, and zoo staff have refrained from physical contact with the newborns.
Once the cubs reach three months of age, the zoo plans to introduce them to the public, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the lives of these majestic creatures.
Thomas Belt Zoo, a popular destination welcoming between 50,000 to 60,000 visitors annually, is proud to contribute to the conservation and education of wildlife, particularly of species like the puma, which holds significance across the Americas.
Pumas, known for their vast geographic range spanning from the high Andean regions of southern Peru to the jungles of Central America, have faced challenges in certain areas due to human encroachment.
Despite their resilience, efforts to protect and preserve these magnificent animals remain crucial for survival.
