A touching rescue: volunteers free an elephant stuck in a sewage drain

A group of volunteers came together to rescue an elephant that found herself stuck in a sewage drain at Ugab Rest Camp in Namibia.

The gentle giant, a female elephant, had accidentally fallen into the three-foot by four-foot channel at night and could not climb.

The discovery was made by guests and staff the following morning, prompting an immediate response to aid the distressed animal.

Initially, the volunteers tried to keep the elephant cool and comfortable by showering her with water and dust to combat the sweltering Namibian heat.

As time passed and outside help failed, the dedicated group decided to take matters into their own hands.

Armed with hoses, shovels, and unwavering determination, they filled the drain with sand and rocks, gradually raising the ground level in the hope that the elephant could escape to freedom.

Archie van der Merwe, who oversees Laramon Tours and personally witnessed the harrowing 11-hour ordeal, recounted their efforts.

“We couldn’t just stand around any longer and watch the animal suffer, so we decided that the rest camp’s swimming pool pump could drain the water, which was knee-deep,” he said.

With unwavering dedication, they continued their laborious work. After hours of pumping water out and filling the ditch, the elephant’s knees were finally at a height where she could bend them, making her escape feasible.

Throughout the process, the elephant exhibited remarkable patience and never aggressively approached her rescuers, seemingly understanding their intentions.

Finally, after three hours of relentless teamwork and perseverance, the moment everyone had been hoping for arrived.

The elephant mustered the strength to lift herself on her hind legs and successfully climbed out of the sewage drain.

Mr. Van der Merwe expressed his joy, saying, “It was worth the effort. Everybody that helped with the rescue went to the swimming pool afterward to cool themselves and have a drink to celebrate her rescue.”

This heartwarming rescue is a poignant reminder of the power of unity and compassion, highlighting the incredible bond between humans and wildlife.

The selfless actions of these volunteers made all the difference for one majestic creature in need.
