At Mana Pools, an African elephant amazes with its impressive fruit-harvesting abilities

Elephants are often seen as calm, leisurely creatures, but their agility can be genuinely remarkable when hunger strikes.

A recent display by an African bull elephant at Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe has highlighted this surprising skill.

In a breathtaking moment captured by photographer Bobby-Jo Vial, the elephant stood on his hind legs, gracefully stretching his trunk to pluck juicy fruits from the highest branches.

This rare and endearing sight showcases the unique strength and balance of the African bull elephant, the largest land animal on Earth.

Mana Pools is one of the few places where such behavior can be observed. According to Vial, this skill is learned by observing other elephants, especially during dry spells when food is scarce.

“This feeding behavior is unique to African bull elephants. Mana Pools is one of the few places where people can observe this,” Vial explained.

Despite witnessing this behavior, the seasoned wildlife photographer was still captivated.

Her extensive portfolio includes features in top publications like The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The New York Post, Huffington Post, and Africa Geographic. However, she considers this series one of her career highlights.

The African bull elephant’s remarkable fruit harvesting ability is a testament to their resilience and adaptability.

While illegal hunting once threatened their survival, conservation efforts since 2017 have made a difference, although these majestic creatures still face significant threats.
