For this Chihuahua, his body may be a little different from the other furry ones in the shelter, but that has not been enough of a reason to stop running and playing at all hours of the day. His name is Joey and at just 3 months old he has taught everyone who knows his story a chair of perseverance.
The furry lives with dozens of adoptive siblings at Vintage Pet Rescue , a shelter for older and disabled furry ones, located in Rhode Island (United States). But even if the Chihuahua is missing its two front legs, that has not been an impediment to getting ahead.
The puppy was born that way due to a genetic condition, so in his short life he already learned to defend himself with only his hind legs and guess what? Well, Joey is quite happy.
Kristen Peralta, founder of Vintage Pet Rescue, is delighted with the Chihuahua because, although she knows that it is a breed with a lot of energy, Joey surpasses all the dogs she has come across as a rescuer.
“Joey is one of the happiest dogs we have ever met. He doesn’t know that he is different and he loves to play with toys, wrestle with the other dogs, enjoy his wading pool and get cuddles,” he said.
For Joey there is nothing wrong with his body, he accepts himself and enjoys life as he has been. That’s right: whatever this chihuahua can’t achieve, he will surely try a thousand and one times before giving up.
Joey has an infectious personality and Kristen is privileged to have known him. That’s why he appreciates the cooperation of the first shelter that he thought of her to be her protector.
This pup first fell into the hands of CT Humane Society volunteers , who felt he would be better off with Kristen and her team.
At Vintage Pet Rescue, Joey is the most spoiled. At his young age he has a lot of energy, but he is also a sleepyhead and spoiled. In fact, he has a whole collection of stuffed animals available to him both to play with and to snuggle with whenever he wants.
The Chihuahua has several favorite toys, but a plush llama seems to be his favorite. He turns to her every time it’s time to take her nap.
Although he sometimes copies the attitudes of the bigger dogs in the group, Joey is still a puppy and that’s why seeing him snuggled up with his stuffed animals is so endearing.
“He’s still a puppy, so he plays rough and then searches for a nap. Joey loves to snuggle up with his big stuffed animals and take a long nap…He loves his toys!” Peralta said.
Taking care of this chihuahua has pleased Peralta, who sees it as an example of perseverance. For the animalist, her main motive is to help him and make sure he doesn’t get into trouble.
“Joey can climb stairs, climb on the couch, and pretty much get where he wants to go. It’s really amazing to see him move so well. Nothing stops it,” he said.
Currently, the Chihuahua is waiting for a wheelchair that will help him move more easily. The chair will be run by the Eddie’s Wheels for Pets team . After he has his chair and receives his castration, the furry will be ready to be adopted and this process is very exciting to Peralta.
Although he looks different, this Chihuahua’s attitude is contagious and will surely make many families fall in love. Let’s trust that his caregiver chooses the best one for him.
