One blade of the offshore wind turbine Ming Yang is more than 140m long.
Energy technology company Ming Yang Smart Energy recently launched the world’s largest wind turbine. The giant offshore machine has propellers more than 140m long, when rotating will sweep over an area larger than 9 football fields.
The Chinese wind turbine maker said in a press release that the turbine has a maximum capacity of 18 megawatts, producing enough electricity to power 96,000 people annually.
Ming Yang Company said it will use the world’s largest turbine to replace smaller models, reducing the number of turbines that need to be installed in a given project, thereby helping to reduce costs. In addition, with the improvements put into production, this wind turbine is lighter in weight, reducing the pressure in the construction of the foundation, thereby reducing materials and logistics.
The announcement comes after China State Shipbuilding Corporation announced their new record-breaking turbine. They also designed turbines with a capacity of 18 megawatts, but with slightly smaller blades.
Ming Yang also unveiled its first 16 megawatt turbine on January 10. This turbine model broke records when it was first announced in August 2021.
China is the world’s largest wind energy market. The country’s turbine manufacturers have taken advantage of strong demand to build bigger and better plants. They can now compete with European and American rivals such as Vestas Wind Systems A/S and General Electric Co.
