Meech Davignon from California, USA, adopted a chicken with a serious disability; the Malaysian Serama chicken lost its toes due to feather mites, parasites that feed on the blood, feathers and scales of birds.
Davignon named her Nubz and treated her with great care, using bandages made of Vaseline and cotton that needed to be changed three times a day. She did everything she could to help the chicken recover, but she noticed that even with the treatment, the bird had difficulty moving on hard surfaces.
Then Davignon remembered that she had a pair of tiny slippers that her dog never wore that could work for Nubz. “As she got more comfortable in her slippers, I kept them on for longer and longer,” the bird’s owner told the Washington Post . “Soon she was moving around a lot better than she could without them, because they were great little mobility devices. I would let her use them to walk on wood chips and anything else that was rough on her feet.”
Last January, Davignon created a TikTok account for Nubz, posting videos of her walking around in her slippers. This sparked a wave of interest in the chicken, and many people asked if they could send her more shoes. Then the packages started arriving, and soon Nubz had styles for every occasion, from blue suede shoes and dinosaur-claw boots to sandals and sneakers.
Davignon keeps all of the shoes in a dresser in her bedroom, and every time a new pair arrives in the mail, she posts a TikTok video of the chicken showing off. “The internet has been such a blessing, it’s unreal that so many people love my little critter,” she said.
