Coffee shop customers in Tokyo can interact with a pair of capybaras while enjoying a warm beverage.
You may have heard of cat cafés, which are establishments where people can enjoy a drink while petting cats; but one cafe in Tokyo, Japan, is making waves by offering its customers a unique experience. Instead of felines, customers can interact with a pair of capybaras.
That’s right, at Cafe Capyba, patrons can enjoy a hot beverage in the company of two large capybaras named Kohaku and Pisuke. The enormous rodents roam freely around the small space, giving patrons the opportunity to see the animals, native to South America, up close.
According to its website description , Cafe Capyba is a “place to provide healing”; visitors are encouraged to pet, observe, and take photos of the cute, furry creatures. “Take time to relax while observing their peaceful presence.” Customers can also offer the animals some treats; snacks to feed the capybaras are available inside the cafe.
The idea, which may seem strange to many, has won over the public, who wait up to four hours and do not hesitate to pay US$8.31, or a little over R$40, just to enter the café and enjoy 30 minutes of coexistence with the rodents. For an additional 10 minutes, customers must pay an extra fee.
