Mother Astounded After Giving Birth to Exceptionally Large Baby Boy

First-ᴛι̇ɱe mum Jenna Wellington gave birth to baby Theo by caesarean section, with the infant coming in at a whopping 13lb and 5oz – thought to be one of the biggest babies born in Wales

A British mum has given birth a baby weighing a whopping 13lbs – saying she and her partner were left stunned at his size.

Jenna Wellington thinks she may have given birth to one of Wales’ biggest ever babies after her son, Theo, was born earlier this month. The newborn tipped the scales at a stunning 13lb and 5oz and, at three weeks, is already wearing clothes for six-month-olds.

Jenna, 26, and partner Jordan, 27, welcomed Theo, who is their first child, after being induced on July 4. The new mum was already two weeks overdue, and said she suspected her son would be big – “but not that big”.

Theo was delivered by caesarean section after a gruelling 16-hour labour. “It was quite a difficult labour, and I lost so much blood,” Jenna told Wales Online. “Because I had a caesarean and I was out of it, it didn’t hit me until I actually held him. I didn’t have any growth scans so I didn’t know how big he would be.

“Everyone couldn’t believe how big he was – even the hospital was like: ‘Oh my god.’ Everyone was coming in to see him. It was overwhelming, then. Everyone was saying well done. It was an amazing feeling, knowing that I’ve carried that weight.”

Data from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health says the median average newborn boy weighs 7.7kg. The average baby boy would only reach Theo’s birth weight at 11 weeks old.

Jenna believes Theo is one of the biggest children born in Wales. The world record for heaviest birth is apparently held by a boy in Ohio born to a 7ft11in mother in 1879, reportedly weighing a staggering 22lb.

A woman in Brazil earlier this year gave birth to a baby weighing 16lbs. Baby Angerson Santos was born at a hospital in January, also measuring a whopping 2ft.

The UK’s biggest baby is reportedly 15lb 8oz Guy Carr, born in 1992. In 2021, mum Cherral Mitchell gave birth to baby Alpha weighing 14lb 15oz – who is believed to have been the third biggest baby born at the time.
