Young Elephant Saved in the Mara from the Poacher’s Snare

In February 2017, a distressing report emerged from the Mara region: a young elephant calf had become ensnared, with a wire wrapped tightly around its trunk.

Wildlife rangers were immediately dispatched to monitor the situation, while the Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit, a collaboration between SWT and KWS, was mobilized for a swift response.

Quick action in such cases often enables successful on-site treatment of snares injuries, leading to full recovery. There was hope that this calf would be similarly fortunate.

The Mara, known for its stunning landscapes and rich wildlife, is also a focal point for conservation initiatives to safeguard its inhabitants.

Unfortunately, despite these efforts, incidents of animals falling victim to snares set by poachers continue to occur. The situation was dire for this young elephant caught in the cruel trap.

Upon arrival, the veterinary team assessed the calf’s condition. The young elephant was visibly distressed, struggling against the wire, constricting its trunk. The team acted precisely, immobilizing the calf to ensure its safety and reduce further stress.

The veterinarians carefully cut the wire using specialized equipment, freeing the calf from its painful predicament. Despite the trauma it had endured, the calf displayed remarkable resilience.

With the snare removed, the team immediately treated the calf’s wounds. Antiseptic was applied to prevent infection, and pain relief was administered to ease the calf’s discomfort. The veterinary team stayed close, closely monitoring the calf’s condition and providing ongoing care.

In the days that followed, the calf showed signs of recovery. Its wounds began to heal, and its strength gradually returned.

Under the careful watch of the veterinary team, the calf resumed its normal activities, a testament to its resilience and the dedication of those involved in its rescue.

The successful rescue of this young elephant highlights the importance of quick and decisive action in fighting against wildlife poaching and conserving our planet’s biodiversity.

It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable species and preserve their natural habitats.

As the calf takes its first steps back into the wild, we are reminded of nature’s resilience and the unwavering commitment of those who work tirelessly to protect it.
