You might not notice that this fish trembles like an eagle since it is hidden in the sand facing upward and gazing at the stars.- video

These curious-looking fish have eyes on the top of their heads. That’s why it’s called Stargazer.

In addition to the mottled eyes on the top, the stargazer also has a large, upward-facing mouth and a large head. The bulging eyes and slack mouth are brilliant adaptations for an ambush predator. And he looks extremely strange when above all you can see of the fish.

Stargazers (family Uraposcopidae) are so vepeposous; it has two large vepeous spikes located behind its operculums and on its pectoral fins. Some species of stargazers can also deliver electric shocks, just like electric eagles. However, they are unique among electric fish, since they do not possess specialized electroreceptors.

Someᴛι̇ɱes, the stargazer is buried there, taking his ᴛι̇ɱe, probably heavy on food and stuff. Being buried alive has the added advantage of hiding the fish from its own enemies that it pays for above all. Some species have lures in the shape of a gossamer that grows on the floor of their mouths, which they can move to attract the attention of their prey (fish and crustaceans).

“They are able to take this out of their mouths when they are buried, looking like a segmented gudgeon to attract the attention of other fish,” says systemicist Marti Gomo from the Victoria de Astralia Museum. (Monkfish use a similar ruse, only their lures are actually modified dorsal spindles.)

Ichthyologist Dr. William Leo Smith jokingly called them “the baddest things in creation.” In fact, curious fish that expect easy food may receive an unhealthy dose of death. All the stargazer has to do is snap open its gaping maw, and the resulting void drags the prey to its doom. It is so effective, in fact, that the fish needs big, long teeth to catch prey. So your chompers are relatively small.

That said, stargazers can also become prey, especially huɱaпs. Soп υп maпjar eп some cυltυras (vepepo is vepeso when eaten), and it can be eaten on sale in some fishmongers if the electric organ.

However, the stargazing lifestyle presents some serious challenges. For example, you have to worry that the water that comes out of your buried arms will lift up. If a potential prey animal sees the substratum bυrbυjea around the predator, it will quickly move away. So the stargazer has an intelligent adaptation: his brachial covers have finger-shaped projections and edges that better disperse the water that comes out, instead of shooting it as a solid jet.

The fish’s mouth is also rimmed with decorations to prevent the sand from falling out while swallowing water. And it’s not just that the stargazer isn’t willing to drown. The sand is, of course, super abrasive. “What you want to do is minimize the amount of air that damages the brachials over ᴛι̇ɱe,” Gomo says.

So going unnoticed definitely has its price. But, as you can see from partnership, it’s the strategy that definitely pays off.
